Reduction of male breasts

Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement is not a rare phenomenon. Every third man up to the age of 40 and every second man over the age of 50 has a more or less pronounced problem. Reduction of male breast or mastectomy in men is the most effective surgical method to solve the problem of enlarged breasts. It occurs as a result of gland enlargement and fat tissue accumulation.

We generally recommend that you wait until the age of 18 before deciding to have surgery. There are certain exceptions, but in this case you must consult a plastic surgeon together with your parents. Socially active mature men often want to get rid of rounded chests. Bodybuilders and athletes are very sensitive to this problem because their bodies are often scrutinized. Men of all ages can benefit greatly from this procedure.

Preoperative preparation

The surgeon must be familiar with all health problems, allergic reactions, previous operations, taking medications, sports activities, etc. Checking the general state of health and basic laboratory analyzes is mandatory for all patients. It would be desirable to stop smoking and taking medicines and preparations that affect blood coagulation.

During the preoperative preparation, photo documentation is made, which is complemented by photos during and after the operation, as well as during dressing.

Surgery

On the day of surgery, it is important that you do not take food at least 6 hours before the agreed time of surgery and clear liquids at least two hours before.

  • Anesthesia: The gynecomastia reduction surgery is performed under general endotracheal anesthesia. In the case of smaller areas or one-sided gynecomastia, it is possible to perform the operation under local anesthesia.
  • Duration: Depending on the size and the reduction technique, the duration is from 90 to 150 minutes.

Postoperative course

A feeling of pain, pressure, swelling occurs in the first days. A compression brace is worn for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. During the next two to three weeks, you return to normal activities, while six weeks after the operation it is possible to return to training. After the procedure, you should take care of the scar itself and lubricate the incision site with moisturizing creams for up to several weeks after the procedure.

Complications

Male breast reduction is associated with general surgical risks such as bleeding and infection. Patients are presented with all the risks as well as the mandatory adherence to the given instructions. Although most patients do not have any complications, you can discuss any possible complications with our expert team in Naša mala klinika in Sarajevo.
